The Urban Operations Laboratory
This task involves efforts to optimize small team performance in support of the Marine Expeditionary Rifle Squad (MERS). It focuses on tools and techniques needed to maximize and/or extend peak physiological and psychological performance of members of the MERS. Initial work focuses on the physiological aspects of enhancing team performance and serves as the basis for peak team performance research identifying the cognitive processes, knowledge, and actions associated with high-performance teams.

Conceptual Tent Cooling Application
A new two-man tent climate-control system may significantly enhance the MERS ability to conduct and sustain operations in a wide range of climates. This lightweight, built-in tent component will not add pack weight, but will provide heat removal and heat addition in extreme weather environments.

Surface Tension Evaporation mesh
If successful, this technology may also be useful for larger tents and semi-permanent facilities. This could result in large energy savings and reduced logistical requirements for forward operations bases.

Development of the Squad Safety Planning System software helps MERS mission planners determine operational risks requiring specific equipment and clothing configurations. Planners are able to select individual Marine and squad clothing and equipment by estimating environmental conditions, mission time, and pre-programmed activities.
