The Urban Operations Laboratory

Prototypes of luminescent capsules were completed in 2006. The capsules emit light when crushed and provide a surveillance tool, when scattered on the ground in areas of interest, such as roadsides or “off-limits” areas, and monitored. USMC is currently evaluating this application while the UOL tailors the duration and wavelengths of light emitted. The same technology may also have marking applications in gun-fired munitions.
