The Urban Operations Laboratory
Work with M2 Technologies, Inc. and non-lethal technologies began in 2001, when Congress appropriated funds to establish the Non-lethal Environmental Evaluation and Remediation (NEER) Center at Kansas State University to perform environmental assessments of developing technologies sponsored by the DoD’s Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate (JNLWD). In 2002, Congress appropriated funds to establish the Urban Operations Environmental Laboratory to continue these types of assessments, as well as to build an environmental decision support tool for acquisition managers and to develop new technologies useful for our military forces. CABEM Technologies, Inc. joined the team at this point in time. During the 2006 funding cycle, the name of this organization was changed to the Urban Operations Laboratory (UOL) to more properly reflect the wide range of environmental and new technology development activities underway.
Partners in and outside of the Manhattan, Kansas, area receive additional funds to complete UOL projects. In Manhattan, the UOL has supported over 100 positions at KSU, NanoScale Materials, Inc. (a company based on nanotechnology research discoveries at KSU), and M2.
